Emergency First Aid for Schools

This qualification is based on the HSE training standard for delivery of First Aid at Work courses for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.

The aim of the qualification is to enable learners to attain the knowledge and competencies needed to deal with a range of emergency first aid situations. Learners should be able to demonstrate the practical administration of safe, prompt, effective first aid in emergency situations with an understanding of the role of the first aider.

Intended audience

The qualification is designed for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities in a school environment, to provide First Aid when dealing with an emergency situation.

Structure of the qualification

This qualification is comprised of one mandatory unit with a total value of 1 credit with 8 guided learning hours* and additional topics meeting the needs of those working in a school environment

*Minimum contact teaching hours apply to this qualification – to comply with HSE/Skills for Health guidance the EFAS qualification should be delivered in no less than 6 hours (1 day) excluding breaks.

Note – Whilst a first aider’s certificate has expired, that person will not be accepted as a workplace first aider under the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, so employers should be encouraged to requalify their first aiders early. 

Learner outcomes

The Emergency First Aid for Schools has one unit that Learners are required to complete in order to achieve the qualification.

Emergency First Aid for Schools

  • Understand the role & responsibilities of a first aider.*
  • Be able to assess an incident.*
  • Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally.*
  • Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally.*
  • Be able to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking.*
  • Be able to manage a casualty with external bleeding.*
  • Be able to manage a casualty who is in shock.*
  • Be able to manage a casualty with a minor injury.*
  • Understand how to provide first aid to an infant and a child with anaphylaxis.
  • Be able to administer first aid to an infant and a child with injuries to bones, joints and muscles.
  • Be able to administer first aid to an infant and a child with head and spinal injuries.
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with burns or scalds.

*These outcomes meet the requirements of the Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work qualification.

Course cost

The Emergency First Aid for Schools qualification is delivered in-house for clients across the UK and globally at a time to suit you. The cost of this, inclusive of learner resources, handouts, Emergency First Aid Made Easy books and certificates*, is from just £600.00 for up to 12 people. 

A certificate valid for 3 years is issued by Simply First Aid*.

*Simply First Aid is approved to deliver qualifications listed on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). If you would like a certificate for the Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (QCF) qualification in addition to the Emergency First Aid for Schools, this is available at an additional cost.
