Operational First Aid

This qualification is based on the HSE training standard for delivery of First Aid at Work courses for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.

The aim of the Operational First Aid qualification is to enable learners to attain the knowledge and competencies needed to deal with a range of emergency first aid situations. Learners should be able to demonstrate the practical administration of safe, prompt, effective first aid in emergency situations with an understanding of the role of the first aider.

Intended audience

The qualification is designed for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to provide an Emergency Medical Response when dealing with an emergency situation as part of a Medical Responder scheme.

All learners must have previously completed a First Aid at Work qualification to join this course.

Structure of the qualification

This qualification is comprised of one mandatory unit with a total value of 1 credit with 8 guided learning hours.

Learner outcomes

The Operational First Aid qualification has one unit that Learners are required to complete in order to achieve the qualification.

Operational First Aid

  • Understand the role, responsibilities and limitations of an operational first aider.
  • Be able to assess and respond to an incident using a stepwise approach.
  • Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally.
  • Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally.
  • Be able to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking.
  • Be able to manage a casualty with external bleeding and catastrophic bleeding.
  • Be able to manage a casualty who is in shock.
  • Be able to manage a casualty with a range of medical or environmental illnesses.
  • Be able to manage a casualty with a minor injury.
  • Be able to use an available automated external defibrillator.
  • Be able to administer emergency and therapeutic oxygen.
  • Be able to use a range of airway adjuncts.
  • Be able to provide appropriate immobilisation of a casualty using available adjuncts.
