Emergency First Aid for Sport
The Emergency First Aid for Sport (EFAS) has been produced by Simply First Aid to meet the needs of coaches and participants from a broad range of sports.
Why a Sport specific First Aid course?
The aim of the EFAS is twofold:
- To enable a candidate to be able to act as an appointed person to take charge of the first aid arrangements, including looking after the equipment and facilities and calling the emergency services when required.
- To deal with incidents that may arise whilst coaching or participating in sport.
Arrangements should be made for an appointed person to be available to undertake these duties at all times when people are at work.
It should be remembered that appointed persons are not first aiders and so should not attempt to give first aid for which they have not been trained.
How long is the course?
Training courses, including final assessment, must last at least 6 contact hours. Contact hours mean actual teaching or practical time. It does not include coffee and meal breaks. The programme can be run over one-day or in sessions over a period of weeks.
What is covered?
The course syllabus, in addition to dealing with incidents that may arise whilst coaching or participating in sport*, covers the following as laid down by the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981:
- Acting safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Treating an unconscious casualty (including seizure)
- Choking
- Wounds and bleeding
- Shock
- Minor injuries
- Preventing cross infection, recording incidents and actions and the use of available equipment
*The injuries with a significantly higher incidence rate arising in sporting environments are: contusions and abrasions; fractures; and sprains and strains.
