Immediate Life Support (ILS) – CSTF Level 3 is a practical, clinically-focused training course designed to support dental professionals in the early recognition and management of the deteriorating adult patient. The course is mapped to the UK Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF) Level 3 and is aligned to current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidance and national best practice.

This training supports compliance for NHS, private healthcare providers, GP practices, care settings and community services who have a responsibility to ensure staff are appropriately trained to respond to medical emergencies.

Training is available on-site across Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset and the wider South West, as well as London and the surrounding regions. National delivery is available by request.

What is CSTF Level 3 Immediate Life Support?

CSTF Level 3 Immediate Life Support focuses on the management of the deteriorating patient prior to full cardiac arrest. It develops the knowledge, practical skills and situational awareness needed to recognise early warning signs and respond effectively until the arrival of advanced clinical support.

It is suitable for staff who:

  • Work in clinical environments

  • May be required to initiate life-saving interventions

  • Have a duty to respond in emergency situations

This includes healthcare assistants, nurses, carers, community responders, allied health professionals and designated first responders.

By the end of this Immediate Life Support (CSTF Level 3) course, learners will be able to:

  • Recognise the signs of acute deterioration in the adult patient

  • Apply the ABCDE structured approach to assessment and management

  • Provide effective basic airway management including adjuncts

  • Perform high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

  • Safely and confidently use an automated external defibrillator (AED)

  • Manage an adult patient who is choking

  • Communicate effectively using recognised clinical structures

  • Work within team roles and understand escalation pathways

  • Support immediate post-resuscitation care prior to handover

Course content

This course covers:

  • Recognition of the seriously ill/deteriorating adult

  • Structured ABCDE assessment

  • Basic airway management and oxygen use
