Basic Life Support

The Adult and Paediatric Basic Life Support Course covers a stepwise approach to emergencies, CPR, the safe use of and AED, choking and the recovery position. The course meets the latest guidelines from the UK resuscitation council - covering the practical elements of Basic Life Support.

Why do I need this?

The aim of the qualification is to enable learners to attain the knowledge and competencies needed to deal with life threatening emergencies. Learners should be able to demonstrate the practical administration of safe, prompt, effective basic life support in emergency situations.

Who is it for?

This course is suitable for anyone wanting to be prepared to manage a life threatening emergency situation if it arises. Doctors, dentists, healthcare professionals and people from all walks of life.

What will I Learn?

By the end of the training and assessment, learners will

  • be able to recognise cardiorespiratory arrest

  • ]know how to summon immediate emergency help in accordance with local protocols

  • be able to start CPR using chest compressions

  • know how to recognise and respond to patients with clinical deterioration or cardiorespiratory arrest, escalating care in accordance with local policy

  • be able to initiate an appropriate emergency response, which may include management of choking, anaphylaxis and the use of the recovery position, all in accordance with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines

  • be able to initiate and maintain effective chest compressions in accordance with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines

  • be able to provide basic airway management i.e. ensure an open airway

  • be able to initiate and maintain effective lung ventilations in accordance with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines

  • know how an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can be operated safely and appropriately

  • understand their individual role and responsibilities in responding to persons in emergency situations

  • understand their individual responsibilities in reporting and recording details of an emergency event accurately

  • understand the importance of undertaking any resuscitation interventions within the limits of their personal capabilities and context of any previous training received

  • know how they should apply the local Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Policy within clinical context.

  • understand and be able to apply the ABCDE approach

  • know how to manage and co-ordinate roles and responsibilities within the team in responding to emergency situations until the arrival of a resuscitation team or more experienced assistance

  • be able to participate as a member of the resuscitation team

  • be able to provide initial post resuscitation care until the arrival of the resuscitation team or more experienced assistance.

Learner Assessment

There is 1 method used to assess the Adult and Paediatric Basic Life Support programme.

Practical assessment  - this is observed by the Trainer throughout the course, with the results of each key skill being recorded on the Practical Assessment Papers provided.
The Practical Assessment Papers are:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Practical Assessment

  • Safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator Practical Assessment

  • Choking Practical Assessment

What will I achieve?

On successful completion of the training and assessment, learners will receive an eCertificate stating the learning outcomes and 3 hours for CPD purposes.

This training is delivered to UK Resuscitation Council guidelines.

Course and Venue Details

We run our courses at Roko Health Club by Chiswick Bridge, which has a car park as well as good public transport options. There is an onsite cafe for food and drink.

The Basic Life Support course starts at 9.30am and will finish by 12.30pm. There is a short break part way through the session.

Learners are advised to wear clothes that they are comfortable kneeling, bending and laying in.
