Course Overview
Medical Emergencies in Dental & Clinical Practice is a comprehensive one-day course for teams who want to develop a deeper understanding of clinical emergencies and strengthen their ability to respond effectively when a patient's condition deteriorates.
Unlike a short refresher session, this course allows time for structured patient assessment, clinical decision-making, practical skills, team leadership and realistic scenarios.
The training can be tailored to the clinical environment, patient population, equipment and emergency procedures of the practice. It is suitable both for teams undertaking more comprehensive initial training and for established teams seeking a more in-depth review of their emergency response.
The emphasis is on practical clinical crisis management: recognising what is happening, deciding what to do, working effectively as a team and responding under realistic conditions.
Learner Outcomes

Apply a structured approach to assessing an acutely unwell or deteriorating patient.
Recognise and prioritise life-threatening problems.
Demonstrate appropriate initial management of a range of medical emergencies encountered in clinical practice.
Apply effective adult BLS and AED skills within a wider emergency response.
Demonstrate appropriate airway and ventilation skills within their scope of practice.
Use relevant emergency equipment and medicines appropriately within their role and local procedures.
Allocate roles and demonstrate effective team leadership during an emergency.
Communicate effectively within the clinical team and with external emergency services.
Make appropriate decisions about escalation and transfer of care.
Manage realistic, evolving clinical scenarios.
Reflect on team performance and identify improvements to the practice's emergency response.
Relate emergency procedures and equipment to the specific clinical environment in which they work.
Learner Assessment & Reflection
Learners are assessed throughout the session through practical skills demonstration, scenario-based activities, questioning and instructor observation. The focus is on the learner's ability to recognise a medical emergency, undertake an appropriate initial assessment, respond effectively, use relevant emergency equipment and work as part of a clinical team.
The course is developmental rather than a formal regulated assessment. Learners receive feedback throughout the session and are encouraged to reflect on their confidence, team response and areas for further development within their own clinical environment.
