Is this a refresher course?

Yes. This course is designed primarily as refresher and update training for healthcare professionals who have existing knowledge or previous training.

It provides an opportunity to practise essential resuscitation skills, refresh knowledge and develop confidence in responding to emergencies involving adults, children and infants.

Does this course count as CPD?

The course can provide evidence to support verifiable CPD, where the activity meets the relevant requirements for verifiable CPD.

For dental professionals, medical-emergency training is particularly relevant to professional development. The General Dental Council states that dental professionals must be trained in dealing with medical emergencies, including resuscitation, and maintain up-to-date evidence of capability.

Training should reflect the individual's role, responsibilities and clinical setting.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

• Recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis in adults, children and infants.

• Initiate an appropriate emergency response to suspected anaphylaxis.

• Understand the role and appropriate use of adrenaline in the management of anaphylaxis.

• Adapt their emergency response according to the age and circumstances of the patient.

• Recognise deterioration and identify when resuscitation may be required.

• Perform appropriate CPR for adults, children and infants.

• Use an AED appropriately for adults, children and infants.

• Recognise and manage choking in adults, children and infants.

• Use relevant emergency equipment appropriately within their scope of practice.

• Work effectively as part of a clinical team during anaphylactic and resuscitation scenarios.

• Apply their knowledge and skills through realistic adult and paediatric scenarios.

Practical learner assessment

Learners are assessed throughout the course through direct observation of practical skills and participation in realistic scenarios.

The trainer observes and records performance in key areas including CPR for adults, children and infants, safe AED use, choking management and anaphylaxis management. Learners receive feedback throughout the session and have opportunities to practise and repeat skills where required.

The assessment is practical and skills-based rather than a written examination.

What is Basic Life Support for healthcare professionals?

Basic Life Support for healthcare professionals is practical training in recognising and responding to life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest, with skills such as CPR, AED use and choking management. This course additionally covers anaphylaxis and applies these skills to adults, children and infants.

Does the course include paediatric BLS?

Yes. This course covers Basic Life Support for adults, children and infants, including age-appropriate CPR, AED use and choking management.

Does the course include anaphylaxis training?

Yes. Anaphylaxis recognition and management is a core part of the course, alongside BLS, CPR, AED use and choking management.
