It is a common expectation that healthcare staff will have sufficient knowledge and skills to be able to recognise and respond to signs of clinical deterioration.

While the priority is on preventing clinical deterioration, some patients’ condition will progress to cardiorespiratory arrest and require cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Early and effective resuscitation can save lives. Healthcare organisations must have a clearly defined resuscitation policy and ensure that they provide an effective resuscitation response and service. As part of their duty to ensure safe and effective care, healthcare organisations must ensure that their workforce receives the appropriate training, including periodic updates, in order to maintain a level of resuscitation competence relevant to their role.

Course Overview

BLS & Management of Anaphylaxis in Clinical Practice combines essential adult basic life support with focused practical training in the recognition and management of anaphylaxis.

The course is designed for clinical teams who already have previous training and want to refresh their BLS skills while developing greater confidence in responding to a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

Participants practise recognising the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, responding promptly, using appropriate emergency medication and equipment, and working effectively as a team. The session also reinforces the transition from managing an anaphylactic emergency to providing appropriate life support if the patient's condition deteriorates.

The course is particularly relevant to dental, GP, aesthetic and other clinical practices where anaphylaxis may occur unexpectedly.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis.

  • Distinguish anaphylaxis from other causes of acute deterioration where appropriate.

  • Initiate an appropriate emergency response to suspected anaphylaxis.

  • Understand the role and appropriate use of adrenaline in the management of anaphylaxis.

  • Use relevant emergency equipment appropriately within their scope of practice.

  • Recognise when a patient is deteriorating towards cardiac arrest.

  • Perform effective adult CPR.

  • Use an AED safely and effectively.

  • Work effectively as a team during an anaphylactic emergency and subsequent resuscitation.

  • Apply their knowledge and skills through realistic clinical scenarios.

Learner Assessment

Learners are assessed throughout the course through direct observation of practical skills and participation in realistic scenarios. The trainer records performance against the key skills covered and provides feedback and opportunities for further practice where required.
