“Designed for teams working in clinical practice who regularly work with children or infants.”

It is a common expectation that healthcare staff will have sufficient knowledge and skills to be able to recognise and respond to signs of clinical deterioration.

While the priority is on preventing clinical deterioration, some patients’ condition will progress to cardiorespiratory arrest and require cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Early and effective resuscitation can save lives. Healthcare organisations must have a clearly defined resuscitation policy and ensure that they provide an effective resuscitation response and service. As part of their duty to ensure safe and effective care, healthcare organisations must ensure that their workforce receives the appropriate training, including periodic updates, in order to maintain a level of resuscitation competence relevant to their role.

Course Overview

This course provides a comprehensive refresher in basic life support for clinical teams who may treat adults, children and infants.

It includes the adult clinical BLS skills covered in our three-hour course, together with practical training in CPR for children and infants, AED use and choking management.

The course is particularly suitable for general dental, GP and other clinical practices where children and infants may be among the patients treated.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

  • Recognise cardiac arrest in adults, children and infants.

  • Perform appropriate CPR for adults, children and infants.

  • Use an AED appropriately for adult and paediatric patients.

  • Recognise and manage choking in adults, children and infants.

  • Demonstrate appropriate basic airway and ventilation techniques.

  • Work effectively as part of a resuscitation team.

  • Adapt their response according to the age and circumstances of the patient.

  • Apply their skills within practical clinical scenarios.

Learner Assessment

Learners are assessed throughout the course through direct observation of practical skills. The trainer records performance against the key skills covered during the session and provides feedback and opportunities for further practice where required.

The Practical Assessment Papers are:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Practical Assessment - Adults, Children and Infants

  • Safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator Practical Assessment - Adults, Children and Infants

  • Choking Practical Assessment

Who is this for?

  • General and family dental practices.

  • GP and primary-care practices.

  • Paediatric and family healthcare settings.

  • Clinical teams who regularly treat children or infants.

  • Practices wanting a single BLS refresher covering their whole patient population.
