Is this a refresher course?

Yes.

This course is specifically designed as a 4-hour refresher, rather than a replacement for initial Immediate Life Support training.

It assumes that you already have experience of adult resuscitation and medical emergencies. The emphasis is on revisiting important knowledge, practising practical skills and working through realistic scenarios.

You won't spend the day being talked through material you already know. Instead, the session gives you the opportunity to refresh, practise and identify anything that may have become rusty.

If you have not previously undertaken Immediate Life Support training, our Adult Immediate Life Support for Medical Emergencies in Clinical Practice course may be more appropriate.

If you only need to refresh CPR, AED and basic resuscitation skills, our Basic Life Support course may be a better fit.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

  • Recognise the signs of deterioration in an adult patient.

  • Carry out a structured initial assessment.

  • Identify life-threatening problems and prioritise appropriate action.

  • Recognise cardiac arrest and initiate an appropriate emergency response.

  • Perform effective adult CPR.

  • Use an AED safely and effectively.

  • Assess and manage the airway appropriately.

Practical refresher training

Life-support skills are practical skills.

The session is therefore built around hands-on practice and realistic scenarios, rather than a classroom presentation.

You'll have the opportunity to practise individual skills and then bring them together in scenarios involving a deteriorating patient or sudden collapse.

The scenarios are designed to encourage you to assess the situation, recognise what is happening, take appropriate action and communicate effectively with the rest of the team.

You'll receive feedback throughout the session, with opportunities to repeat and refine skills where useful.

Practical learner assessment

This is a refresher course rather than a formal qualifying course.

Your trainer will observe your participation throughout the session and provide feedback on practical skills and scenario performance.

The emphasis is on refreshing and developing practical competence, identifying areas that may need further practice and increasing confidence in responding to a medical emergency.
