It is a common expectation that healthcare staff will have sufficient knowledge and skills to be able to recognise and respond to signs of clinical deterioration.

While the priority is on preventing clinical deterioration, some patients’ condition will progress to cardiorespiratory arrest and require cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Early and effective resuscitation can save lives. Healthcare organisations must have a clearly defined resuscitation policy and ensure that they provide an effective resuscitation response and service. As part of their duty to ensure safe and effective care, healthcare organisations must ensure that their workforce receives the appropriate training, including periodic updates, in order to maintain a level of resuscitation competence relevant to their role.

The Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF - V1.0, January 2020) states that refresher training for all staff in healthcare settings is undertaken on a yearly basis, with additional learner outcomes for clinical staff.

Course Overview

This course combines clinical BLS and practical anaphylaxis management for teams who care for adults, children and infants.

Building on the adult BLS and anaphylaxis course, participants develop the knowledge and practical skills required to recognise and respond to anaphylaxis across different age groups, while also maintaining appropriate CPR, AED and choking-management skills for adults, children and infants.

The course is particularly suitable for general and family dental practices, GP practices and other clinical settings where children and infants are routinely treated.

Training is practical and scenario-based, allowing participants to practise recognising deterioration, initiating an emergency response, using appropriate equipment and working together as a clinical team.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis in adults, children and infants.

  • Initiate an appropriate emergency response to suspected anaphylaxis.

  • Understand the role and appropriate use of adrenaline in the management of anaphylaxis.

  • Adapt their emergency response according to the age and circumstances of the patient.

  • Recognise deterioration and identify when resuscitation may be required.

  • Perform appropriate CPR for adults, children and infants.

  • Use an AED appropriately for adult and paediatric patients.

  • Recognise and manage choking in adults, children and infants.

  • Use relevant emergency equipment appropriately within their scope of practice.

  • Work effectively as part of a clinical team during anaphylactic and resuscitation scenarios.

  • Apply their knowledge and skills through realistic adult and paediatric scenarios.

Learner Assessment

There is 1 method used to assess the Basic Life Support programme.

Practical assessment  - this is observed by the Trainer throughout the course, with the results of each key skill being recorded on the Practical Assessment Papers provided.
