Medical Emergency Refresher Training for Clinical Teams

A patient can become unwell unexpectedly — during treatment, immediately afterwards, or while waiting to be seen.

When children and infants are part of your patient population, your team also needs to understand how assessment, resuscitation and emergency management differ across age groups.

This refresher provides an opportunity to revisit essential BLS skills and practise responding to a range of medical emergencies involving adults, children and infants.

The emphasis is on recognising the emergency, assessing the patient, taking appropriate initial action and working effectively as a team.

What Does the Course Cover?

The course combines clinical BLS across all three age groups with a practical review of medical emergencies relevant to clinical practice.

Basic Life Support for Adults, Children and Infants

Refresh and practise:

  • Recognition of cardiac arrest

  • Adult CPR

  • Child CPR

  • Infant CPR

  • AED use

  • Recovery position

  • Recognition and management of choking

  • Initial assessment of an unresponsive patient

  • Age-appropriate resuscitation considerations

  • Clinical airway and ventilation skills

Medical Emergencies

The medical-emergency element includes recognition and initial management of situations such as:

  • Anaphylaxis

  • Breathing difficulties

  • Chest pain

  • Fainting and loss of consciousness

  • Hypoglycaemia

  • Seizures

  • The seriously ill or deteriorating adult

  • The seriously ill or deteriorating child or infant

The emphasis is on recognising the presentation, taking appropriate initial action and knowing when and how to escalate for further assistance.

Practical, Scenario-Based Training

Medical emergencies are easier to understand when you have the opportunity to practise responding to them.

During the session, learners work through realistic scenarios that allow them to practise:

  • assessing an emergency safely

  • recognising a seriously ill patient

  • identifying immediate priorities

  • adapting their response to the patient's age

  • providing appropriate initial care

  • performing effective CPR and using an AED

  • responding to choking

  • using relevant emergency equipment

  • communicating clearly with colleagues

  • allocating roles within the team

  • escalating appropriately

Scenarios can be adapted to the patients, equipment and clinical environment relevant to your practice.

Particularly Relevant to Dental Practices

Dental practices may treat patients across a wide age range. A team that regularly sees children needs to be confident not only in adult BLS, but also in recognising and responding to emergencies involving younger patients.

This course gives the whole team an opportunity to practise together and consider how their emergency response changes when the patient is an adult, child or infant.

It can incorporate the equipment and emergency procedures available within your practice, helping your team consider:

“What would we actually do if this happened here?”

Train With Your Own Team

In-house training allows your team to practise together in the environment where an emergency could actually happen.

Where appropriate, we can incorporate your own:

  • clinical environment

  • AED and resuscitation equipment

  • oxygen and airway equipment

  • emergency drugs

  • other relevant medical equipment

  • emergency procedures

  • team roles and responsibilities

The aim is to connect the training with the way your team actually works, rather than simply teaching a generic sequence of actions.

Working as a Team

A medical emergency is rarely managed by one person.

Everyone needs to understand their role — from recognising that something is wrong and calling for help, through to providing treatment, retrieving equipment and communicating with the emergency services.

The course provides opportunities to practise:

  • communication

  • role allocation

  • leadership and followership

  • use of emergency equipment

  • escalation

  • handover

  • adapting the team's response to the patient's age

The aim is to help the team respond calmly, effectively and within their individual roles and competence.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is particularly suited to:

  • Dental practices treating children as well as adults

  • Dentists and dental nurses

  • Dental hygienists and therapists

  • GP and primary-care teams

  • Aesthetic and other clinical practices

  • Physiotherapists and allied health professionals

  • Other clinical teams who may treat adults, children and infants

It is designed for established teams undertaking refresher training, rather than people requiring comprehensive initial medical-emergency training.

Give your team the opportunity to practise before they have to respond for real.

“Really useful refresher training. The scenarios were practical and relevant, and it was valuable to practise responding to emergencies involving adults, children and infants as a team.”

How Is This Different From All-Age Clinical BLS?

Our 4-hour Basic Life Support for Adults, Children & Infants in Clinical Practice course focuses on resuscitation, choking and clinical airway and ventilation skills across all three age groups.

This 5-hour refresher goes further with a broader review of medical emergencies using an ABCDE approach within a scenario-based team response.

Choose the 4-hour Clinical BLS course if your main requirement is to refresh BLS across adults, children and infants.

Choose this 5-hour course if you have a responsibility as a clinician to respond to a wider range of medical emergencies in clinical practice.

How Is This Different From the 7-Hour Course?

The 7-hour Adult ILS for Medical Emergencies in Clinical Practice course provides more comprehensive clinical emergency training, with additional time for structured patient assessment, clinical decision-making, practical skills, team leadership and realistic evolving scenarios.

The 5-hour course is deliberately more focused.

It is designed for established teams who want an all-age ILS for Medical Emergencies refresher without committing to a full day of comprehensive medical-emergency training.

Choose the 5-hour refresher if you:

  • Already have experience of BLS.

  • Treat adults, children and/or infants.

  • Want to refresh BLS across all three age groups.

  • Want to revisit common medical emergencies.

  • Want practical scenario-based training.

  • Want to train your existing team together.

  • Want to relate the training to your own clinical environment.

Choose the 7-hour course if you:

  • Want comprehensive medical-emergency training.

  • Need a deeper review of patient assessment and clinical decision-making.

  • Want more time for realistic, evolving scenarios.

  • Are reviewing or developing your practice's wider emergency response.

Assessment and Reflective Practice

This is a practical refresher course rather than a formal regulated qualification.

Learners are observed throughout the session through practical skills, scenarios, questioning and instructor feedback.

The emphasis is on maintaining existing knowledge and skills, identifying areas for development and considering how the team can improve its response to an emergency.

Where appropriate, the session can also provide an opportunity to reflect on your practice's emergency procedures, equipment and team roles.
