Practical, face-to-face BLS and anaphylaxis training for healthcare professionals — 4 hours

This 4-hour practical course provides healthcare professionals with the skills and confidence to recognise and respond to cardiac arrest, choking, anaphylaxis and clinical deterioration in adults, children and infants.

The course combines Basic Life Support (BLS), CPR, AED use, choking management and anaphylaxis training in a clinical setting. Learners practise the skills hands-on, receive instructor feedback and have opportunities to repeat key skills to develop confidence and competence.

The course is suitable for healthcare professionals and clinical teams who treat patients across a range of ages, including dentists, dental nurses, doctors, GPs, nurses, Allied Health Professionals and other patient-facing clinical staff.

Why do I need this?

The aim of the qualification is to enable learners to attain the knowledge and competencies needed to deal with life threatening emergencies. Learners should be able to demonstrate the practical administration of safe, prompt, effective basic life support in emergency situations.

Who is it for?

This course is suitable for anyone wanting to be prepared to manage a life threatening emergency situation if it arises. Doctors, dentists, healthcare professionals and people from all walks of life.

What will I Learn?

By the end of the training and assessment, learners will

  • be able to recognise cardiorespiratory arrest

  • ]know how to summon immediate emergency help in accordance with local protocols

  • be able to start CPR using chest compressions

  • know how to recognise and respond to patients with clinical deterioration or cardiorespiratory arrest, escalating care in accordance with local policy

  • be able to initiate an appropriate emergency response, which may include management of choking, anaphylaxis and the use of the recovery position, all in accordance with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines

  • be able to initiate and maintain effective chest compressions in accordance with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines

  • be able to provide basic airway management i.e. ensure an open airway

  • be able to initiate and maintain effective lung ventilations in accordance with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines

  • know how an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can be operated safely and appropriately

  • understand their individual role and responsibilities in responding to persons in emergency situations

  • understand their individual responsibilities in reporting and recording details of an emergency event accurately

  • understand the importance of undertaking any resuscitation interventions within the limits of their personal capabilities and context of any previous training received

  • know how they should apply the local Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Policy within clinical context.

  • understand and be able to apply the ABCDE approach

  • know how to manage and co-ordinate roles and responsibilities within the team in responding to emergency situations until the arrival of a resuscitation team or more experienced assistance

  • be able to participate as a member of the resuscitation team

  • be able to provide initial post resuscitation care until the arrival of the resuscitation team or more experienced assistance.

Learner Assessment

There is 1 method used to assess the Adult and Paediatric Basic Life Support programme.

Practical assessment  - this is observed by the Trainer throughout the course, with the results of each key skill being recorded on the Practical Assessment Papers provided.
The Practical Assessment Papers are:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Practical Assessment

  • Safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator Practical Assessment

  • Choking Practical Assessment

What will I achieve?

On successful completion of the training and assessment, learners will receive an eCertificate stating the learning outcomes and 3 hours for CPD purposes.

This training is delivered to UK Resuscitation Council guidelines.
